There are 9 short stories in the Skin Deep Archives, with them expanding upon Character bios and World-building. Illumination - Takes place during June 2005, at the Finns residence and focuses on the exploration of the secret of the sphinxes past and how Michelle Jocasta is involved.Focuses on the turning of Anthony Gillis, as well as the interactions between several of the inhabitants of the Liverpool Avalon. Exchanges - Takes place in Liverpool, England, in August 2004.Explains many of the mechanisms of the Skin Deep world. Focuses on the turning (de-spelling of human disguise) of Michelle, a member of the supposedly extinct sphinx species. Orientations - Takes place in the US state of Missouri, in September 2004.The story, as of February 2018, mostly takes place in the year 2004, though one story takes place in the year 2000 and two of latest stories take place in 2005. The comic is split into chapters, some of which are single multi-page short stories, others are multi-chaptered long stories. Most Mythical Creatures have magical medallions, which can hide their true forms from human sight. The story of Skin Deep chronicles around a world where most, if not all, mythical creatures, objects and terminology (e.g magic) exist, but are hidden away from the world of humans. The plot often works to establish a theme of different versions of normalcy, promoting acceptance and diversity. The story's narrative, which began its twelfth arc in January 2015, presents the point of view of Michelle, a college-aged Sphinx who has only recently learned that she is not a human, and the various points of view of the citizens of Liverpool's Avalon, an entire magically hidden city. The story follows the lives of various mythical creatures, such as a gryphon, a nixie, a satyr, and a sphinx, as they disguise themselves (using magical medallions) into the world of humans.

Skin Deep was born out of an interest in mythology, folklore, music, world-building, and the idea that things are often more than they seem, and that it is easy to hide secrets when nobody is expecting them.Skin Deep is a fantasy webcomic series written and drawn by Missourian Kory Bing. After many many years of noodling about, waiting until “the right moment” and discovering that the “right moment” would never come, the first page of Skin Deep was posted on the internet late in 2006 and has been updating semi-steadily ever since.
Skin Deep was thought up in the early 2000s by a teenager with too much time on her hands and access to the internet. She lives with her husband Ben, a wonderful cook with an awesome Czech surname, and their stupid black cat Eisenhower, who isn’t very bright, but we’ll forgive him. After growing up in a river valley outside of a small town populated with 600 people, she moved two hours south and lived in the Ozarks for a few years, and now she lives in Portland, Oregon with all the other cool kids.
She was named after a Harry Chapin song but her parents made up the spelling because they liked the letter “K” more than the letter “C”. Kory Bing was born three days before Halloween in 1984 and she’s always held a small grudge against her mother for not holding out until Halloween because that would have been just so cool.
